About Postherpetic Neuralgia: Approximately 20% of people who have had an episode of shingles experience residual pain in the nerve endings one or more months after the outbreak has subsided. This condition is called postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN. The pain often returns intermittently at unknown intervals. The pain of PHN is neurogenic, resulting from peripheral nerve injury, typically occurring around the site of the initial episode. The affected area is often acutely sensitive to any stimuli, and even the pressure of clothing can produce unbearable pain. Spontaneous remission of PHN occurs in many patients within a few months. In a small percentage of patients the pain can last for several years.

Until recently, PHN was difficult to treat. Antiviral drugs and other medications such as corticosteroids and local/regional anesthesia have been tried without much success. Treatment is therefore based on managing the neuralgia once it develops. A large proportion of those afflicted with herpetic neuralgia are prescribed emollients and topical steroids, which seldom control the neuralgia, or ease the disability associated with the condition.
