Objective: To screen anti-HPV effective fraction from Asarum forbesii Maxim.
Methods: Asarum forbesii Maxim was extracted with systematic solvents (petroleum benzine, ether, ethyl acetate, n-Butanol, ethanol and distilled water) accordingly.
The Polymerase Chain Reaction (FQ-PCR) was applied in the vitro pharmacodynamics for the extracts from Asarum forbesii Maxim. The amplification of HPV-DNA in the lesions of the isolated Condyloma Acuminatum.
Results: After the water extracts of Asarum forbesii Maxim were used for HPV DNA, the PCR amplification showed negative, with the minimum effective concentration 0.4 g/ml.
Conclusion: The water extracts from Asarum forbesii Maxim are effective on anti-human papillomavirus.

We have previously shown that extracts of different Epilobium species, a phytotherapeutic agent used in folk medicine as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, inhibit proliferation of human prostate cells.
The selectivity of this effect was evaluated in four different human cell lines (PZ-HPV-7, normal prostate cells; LNCaP, transformed prostate cells; HMEC, mammary cells, and 1321N1, astrocytoma cells).
Different extracts of Epilobium species had similar growth-inhibitory effects in all cell lines tested, indicating a lack of specificity for prostate cells.
Inhibition of DNA synthesis was mostly due to the nonpolar fraction of the extracts which is expected to contain flavonoids and sterols. This species is the most potent in the antiproliferative effect and contains the highest concentration of oenothein B, a hydrolyzable ellagitannin.
Epilobium inhibited DNA synthesis in all four cell lines tested. Extracts of E. angustifolium (the Linne denomination of E. spicatum) and of E. spicatum from different sources were compared for their ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and for their oenothein B content.
The E. angustifolium extract contained an amount of oenothein B 40-fold higher than the other extract of the same species and was ten times more potent in inhibiting DNA synthesis in a human prostate cell line.
These results indicate that Epilobium extracts inhibit proliferation of prostate cells in a nonspecific manner. Oenothein B may play a role in this effect, but other active compounds are also present.
The difference observed between extracts from the same species underscores the importance of determination and standardization of active ingredients in phytotherapeutic agents. | | | | |

Oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main etiologic factor for cervical neoplasia, although infection alone is insufficient to produce disease. Cofactors such as nutritional factors may be necessary for viral progression to neoplasia.
Results from previous studies have suggested that higher dietary consumption and circulating levels of certain micronutrients may be protective against cervical neoplasia. This study evaluated the role of vitamin A and carotenoids on HPV persistence, comparing women with intermittent and persistent infections.
As determined by the Hybrid Capture II system, oncogenic HPV infections were assessed at baseline and at approximately 3 and 9 months post baseline. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk of persistent HPV infection associated with each tertile of dietary and circulating micronutrients.
Higher levels of vegetable consumption were associated with a 54% decrease risk of HPV persistence (adjusted odds ratio, 0.46; 95% confidence interval, 0.21–0.97).
Also, a 56% reduction in HPV persistence risk was observed in women with the highest plasma cis-lycopene concentrations compared with women with the lowest plasma cis-lycopene concentrations (adjusted odds ratio, 0.44; 95% confidence interval, 0.19–1.01).
This data suggests that vegetable consumption and circulating cis-lycopene may be protective against HPV persistence. | | | | |
