LANDMARK STUDY ON ANTIVIRAL EFFECTS OF ESSENTIAL
OILS TO TREAT THE HERPES VIRUS

“After positive in-vitro results in treating
the herpes virus with essential oil constituents, it was of interest to study
the antiviral activity in whole animals. A prerequisite for chemotherapy of
long-lasting viremia is that a reproducible lethal dose must be found in preliminary
studies. This was achieved after i.p. injection of herpes Ps.R virus, a DNA
virus. The injection of 50 animals (mice) of both sexes with 2.5 x 10 to the
5th virus particles caused a mortality rate of 60%. Simultaneous administration
of .1ul/animal of KMG whole oils reduced the mortality to 36%. In a treatment
study beginning 24 hours after the virus injection with daily doses of .2g of
KMG whole oil/kg, the mortality rate fell to 14%, i.e. a protection of 86%.
The results were significantly different from the null value.”
Further, “The herpes Ps.R virus caused almost
100% (95%) mortality after a single i.p. injection in rabbits. These animals
were used to test to what extent certain essential oils also have a preventive
action. Rabbits (40 per group) received the active substances in their drinking
water dosages of 5 and 50 mg/70 kg 42 days before and 40 days after the virus
injection. The survival rate was.....30% for KMG whole oil." Further, constituents
in H-Balm oil showed to have the strongest effect with a survival rate of 70%
"It was noteworthy that there was considerable increase in the immunoglobulins

As a result, Dr. Deininger summarized his findings
as follows: “The most recent in-vitro studies with a new ATP screening
method have allowed the quantitative detection of the antiviral activity of
various substances, taking into account their cytotoxic action in human cells
and monkey cells." The constituents in H-Balm oil and those in the KMG
